The county of Parintins, as almost all other Amazonian counties, was primitively inhabited by Indians. Its discovery occurred in 1749, when going down the river, explorer José Gonçalves da Fonseca noticed an island that, in view of its extension, stood out among the others at the right margin of the great river. The island was named Tupinambarana e was inhabited by parintintim Indians. The first settlement received the name of Vila Nova da Raínha (Queen's New Village). In 1880, it started to be called Parintins. There is the stage of Festival of Bumbás Caprichoso and Garantido, considered the greatest open-air opera in the world. Parintins is considered the most festive county in Amazonas.
